Bintou Sanankoua's specialist French-language academic history of the Diina of Maasina, the Fulani Islamic reform state Seku Amadu founded in the Inner Niger Delta of present-day Mali, covers its full span from the 1818 jihad through its 1862 conquest by Umar Tall's Toucouleur forces. Sanankoua, a Malian historian, drew on family papers from the household of the writer Amadou Hampate Ba and on manuscript archives held at the Ahmed Baba Centre in Timbuktu.
