Sharai al-Islam is a foundational law manual by Najm al-Din al-Muhaqqiq al-Hilli, a thirteenth century Twelver Shia jurist writing from within the Hilla school that shaped later Shia legal method. It is a primary legal text, not a modern account of one, so it is strongest for stating what classical Twelver law itself holds and weakest as evidence for how any living community actually practices today. Its authority within Shia jurisprudence rests on centuries of use as a teaching and reference text by scholars who trained on it directly, which is a different kind of standing than peer review, closer to how a code of law earns authority through continuous application.
