Dogen's Shobogenzo fascicle Kesa kudoku, dated to 1240, is a primary text by the founder of Japanese Soto Zen. Its strength is that it is Dogen's own treatment of the Buddhist robe, in his own words, and it grounds the unusual weight the kesa carries in Japanese Zen practice today. Its limit is the ordinary one for a single doctrinal text: it presents Dogen's own teaching on the subject, not a comparative or historical account of how the robe was understood in other Buddhist traditions.
