H. W. Parke's Sibyls and Sibylline Prophecy in Classical Antiquity is a standard scholarly study of the prophetic women and the oracular literature attributed to them across the Greek and Roman world, written by a classicist with recognized standing in ancient religion. Its authority rests on close philological work sorting genuine ancient testimony about historical sibyls from the much later Christianized Sibylline Oracles that circulated under their name, a distinction the source itself is careful to maintain. Because the ancient evidence for individual sibyls is fragmentary and often contradictory across different classical authors, Parke's own reconstructions necessarily involve scholarly judgment about which testimony to credit, the normal condition of working with sparse and inconsistent ancient sources rather than a defect unique to this book.
