Cyrus Stearns holds a doctorate in Buddhist studies and has studied with Sakya and Nyingma teachers since the 1970s, and this Wisdom Publications volume in the Library of Tibetan Classics series is his translation of core Sakya Lamdre texts, made with the personal encouragement of Sakya Trizin, then head of the Sakya tradition. Its strength is direct access to texts previously unavailable in any European language, translated by a specialist working closely with the tradition's own senior teachers. Its limit is that as a translation with scholarly introduction it presents the tradition's authorized textual record rather than an outside historian's independent assessment, so a claim needing critical distance from the tradition's own self understanding needs a further source.
