Terror in the Land of the Holy Spirit: Guatemala under General Efrain Rios Montt, 1982 to 1983, Virginia Garrard Burnett's 2010 scholarly study from Oxford University Press, Religion and Global Politics series, is the first full academic examination of the religious dimensions of Guatemala's violencia under the Pentecostal general Efrain Rios Montt, drawing on guerrilla documents, evangelical pamphlets and declassified American records. Its strength is that it is the first study to bring these three kinds of source together on this specific question. Its limit, stated as a scope note, is that its own dated scope is 1982 to 1983; the fact's earlier background, evangelical growth from the 1950s and the 1976 earthquake, and later material, the 1996 peace accords and Maximon devotion, sit outside that window and are not claimed for this source.

Notes
First full academic examination of the religious dimensions of Guatemala's violencia under the Pentecostal general Efrain Rios Montt, drawing on guerrilla documents, evangelical pamphlets and declassified US records; covers the Rios Montt-era counterinsurgency against Maya highland communities, the killing of catechists and ritual specialists, and the UN-backed 1999 genocide finding. Its own dated scope is 1982-1983; the fact's earlier background (evangelical growth from the 1950s, the 1976 earthquake) and later material (the 1996 peace accords, Maximon devotion) sit outside that window and are not claimed for this source.
