Testing the "Three Stages of Trance" Model

Testing the "Three Stages of Trance" Model, Patricia Helvenston, Paul Bahn, John Bradshaw and Christopher Chippindale's 2003 article in Cambridge Archaeological Journal, is a peer reviewed critique of the neuropsychological model widely used to interpret rock art as evidence of altered states of consciousness. Its strength is that it is peer reviewed scholarship in an established archaeology journal, directly engaging and testing the model it critiques. Its limit is that it represents one side of a live scholarly disagreement; a claim resting on the trance model itself should also be checked against its original proponents' own responses.
