Roger Bastide was a sociologist, and this Johns Hopkins University Press book, first published in French in 1960, is his academic study of Candomble and the other Afro Brazilian religions, examining the structure of the terreiro, the ritual house, and the ordered sequence in which the orixas are ceremonially called. Its strength is that Bastide combined sociological method with direct fieldwork in Brazilian Candomble communities at a formative period for the academic study of these traditions, treating them as a serious sociological and religious formation rather than folklore. Its limit is its age and the changes Afro Brazilian religion has undergone since, so a claim about Candomble's current practice or its more recent public standing in Brazil needs a source addressing that more recent period alongside this foundational mid century study.
