Derek Nurse and Gerard Philippson edited this Routledge volume, the standard scholarly reference on the Bantu language family, covering its internal classification, branches such as Nguni, and its place within the wider Niger-Congo family. Its strength is that it gathers contributions from specialist linguists across the many branches of this very large language family, giving genuinely comprehensive linguistic coverage. Its limit is exactly that it is a linguistics reference, addressing classification, grammar and historical relationships among Bantu languages, not the religious content of any specific Bantu-speaking people's tradition, so a claim about a particular group's religious practice needs an ethnographic or religious-studies source instead.
