The Beginning of the World from the Point of View of Quantum Theory, Georges Lemaitre's 1931 letter in Nature, sets out his primeval atom hypothesis, the forerunner of what is now called the Big Bang theory. Its strength is that it is the original source, in a leading international science journal, for an idea that reshaped physical cosmology. Its limit is its brevity: it is a short letter stating the hypothesis rather than a full technical development of it, which Lemaitre and others worked out in later, longer papers.
