Keith H. Basso was an anthropologist, and this Holt, Rinehart and Winston book is his ethnography of a Western Apache community at Cibecue, Arizona, describing among other things the girls' puberty ceremonial, na'ii'ees. Its strength is that it is a sustained fieldwork based ethnography by a specialist in Apache culture, giving detailed firsthand documentation of ceremonial practice as observed. Its limit is that it documents one Apache community at a particular period, so a claim about Western Apache practice more broadly, or about how that practice has continued or changed since, needs a source addressing that wider or more recent scope.
