The Roots of Ayurveda: Selections from Sanskrit Medical Writings

Dominik Wujastyk is a specialist historian of Sanskrit medical literature, and this is a scholarly translation and introduction working directly from the classical Sanskrit medical corpus itself, the Caraka Samhita, Susruta Samhita and Astangahrdaya, rather than a secondhand summary of Ayurvedic ideas. That direct philological engagement with the primary Sanskrit texts is the volume's real evidentiary basis. This record states its own scope honestly: it is cited here for the doshas and the classical Ayurvedic organ scheme as history and doctrine, and the atlas makes no clinical claim on the strength of it. Use it to establish what the classical Sanskrit medical texts themselves state about the doshas and bodily organs; it is not evidence for the clinical efficacy of any Ayurvedic treatment, a question this scholarly translation does not attempt to answer.
