The Zimbabwe Culture: Ruins and Reactions, Gertrude Caton-Thompson's 1931 study from Clarendon Press, is the archaeological excavation report that first established, against the racist theories then current, that Great Zimbabwe was built by indigenous African civilization. Its strength is that it is the foundational scholarly excavation report, still cited for both its findings and its documented role in that historiographical dispute. Its limit is that later archaeological work has refined the chronology and interpretation considerably since 1931, so current dating should be checked against more recent scholarship.
