John Garrett's To Live Among the Stars, published jointly by the World Council of Churches and the University of the South Pacific in 1982, is the standard academic history of Christianity's spread across the Pacific. Its strength is that it covers the chief-led collective conversion pattern, village by village Melanesian conversion, and Protestant and Catholic missionary competition in detail.
