UM News, the United Methodist Church's own official news service, on the Methodist Church's General Conference vote of 4 May 1956 in Minneapolis, which added one sentence to the Book of Discipline extending every paragraph governing ordained ministry to women as well as men, granting full clergy rights, guaranteed appointment and pension standing. The United Methodist Church, formed by the 1968 merger of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church, inherited this practice unbroken.
