Un systeme soudanais de Sirius, Marcel Griaule and Germaine Dieterlen's 1950 article in the Journal de la Societe des Africanistes, is the original ethnographic report of Dogon cosmological knowledge involving the star Sirius. Its strength is that it is the primary peer-reviewed ethnographic source for the claim, based on the authors' own fieldwork among the Dogon. Its limit is that later anthropologists have questioned how much of the reported cosmology reflected pre-existing Dogon belief versus the fieldwork encounter itself, a dispute this record does not resolve.
