The World Religion Database, edited by Todd Johnson and Gina Zurlo, is a continuously updated academic reference database, which is why the atlas records no single publication year for it. Its strength is that it is the most systematic ongoing academic effort to count religious populations worldwide. Its limit is real and specific here: its Hindu sect figures are modelled estimates, no census anywhere actually records affiliation to a particular Hindu sampradaya, and the database carries no figure at all for the Smarta tradition.
