Benjamin Brose's Xuanzang: China's Legendary Pilgrim and Translator, Shambhala Publications, 2021, is a scholarly biography. Its strength is that it is a concise academic account covering the pilgrimage, the translation bureau, the Faxiang school Xuanzang founded, the later legend of Journey to the West, and the modern travels of his own parietal bone relic, in one accessible volume. Its limit is the ordinary one for a concise single volume biography: depth on any one episode is necessarily lighter than a specialist monograph devoted to it alone.
