On 31 October 2016, Pope Francis and Lutheran World Federation president Bishop Munib Younan led a Common Prayer service at the Lutheran Cathedral of Lund, Sweden, opening a year of joint Catholic-Lutheran commemorations for the Reformation's five hundredth anniversary. Around five hundred worshippers attended the cathedral service, the product of a fifty year dialogue between the two communions, and thousands more gathered afterward at the Malmo Arena under the theme Together in Hope. Francis and Younan signed a joint statement committing both communions to deepen their communion and their common witness for justice, and the Lutheran World Federation's Lutheran World Service director and the secretary general of Caritas Internationalis signed a separate declaration on humanitarian cooperation. Younan said the two communions had come to recognize that what unites them is far greater than what divides them.
