Origin from 2021
On 19 June 2021, the Lutheran World Federation Council elected the Estonian theologian Anne Burghardt as the federation's next General Secretary, the first woman and the first person from Central and Eastern Europe to hold the post since the federation's founding in 1947. She took office on 1 November 2021, leading the federation's Geneva based secretariat and its worldwide communion of member churches.
