Origin from 2025
On 27 September 2025, the twentieth annual UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy was presented in Qufu, Shandong province, the birthplace of Confucius, at the opening of that year's China International Confucius Cultural Festival. Established in 2005 with the support of the government of China, the prize had by 2025 recognized fifty seven literacy projects across thirty six countries. That year's three laureates, from Bangladesh, Ireland and Morocco, were honored for programs in floating schools, adult e-learning and inclusive second chance education, and UNESCO's Stefania Giannini marked the anniversary by calling literacy an enduring source of dignity, equality and change.
