From 24 to 25 September 2023, the China Taoist Association and the Chinese Association for Religious and Cultural Exchange hosted the fifth International Daoism Forum at Mount Maoshan in Jiangsu province, the same mountain where the Chinese Daoist Association had adopted its Maoshan Declaration in 2008. More than five hundred delegates, practitioners, scholars and officials from thirty-nine countries and regions attended, under the theme Respecting Tao and Upholding Virtue, Walking with the World. During the Forum, fifty-two Daoist organizations from twenty countries and regions founded the World Federation of Daoism, the faith's first global umbrella body, and elected Li Guangfu, president of the China Taoist Association, as its chairman. Vice Chairman Zhang Gaocheng called the federation's founding a landmark event in the religion's history.
