Origin 1179 to 1180

In 1179, the Southern Song scholar Zhu Xi, serving as prefect of Nankang, rebuilt the ruined White Deer Grotto Academy at the foot of Wulou Peak on Mount Lu in what is now Jiujiang, Jiangxi province, modeling its layout on the Confucius Temple at Qufu. The academy reopened to students and scholars in 1180. Zhu Xi drafted a short code of conduct for the school, later known as the Articles of the White Deer Grotto Academy, setting out moral cultivation alongside classical study as the aims of Confucian education, a code that guided private Confucian academies, or shuyuan, for centuries afterward. The academy grew into one of the Four Great Academies of China, hosting Confucian teachers including Lu Jiuyuan, Lu Zuqian and, much later, Wang Yangming, and remained an active center of Confucian learning for roughly eight hundred years.

Sourced to the subject's own accountEstablished marks the academy's own rebuilding and reopening as a teaching institution under Zhu Xi, not a claim about the founding of Confucianism's academy system as a whole, since the site itself and the broader shuyuan tradition of private academies both predate his arrival by centuries.
