Michael Persinger of Laurentian University proposed in 1983 that religious and mystical experiences are artefacts of temporal lobe function, and tested the idea with an apparatus built by Stanley Koren that applied weak complex magnetic fields over the temporal lobes of participants seated in a darkened chamber. The press named it the God helmet, a label Persinger did not choose. He reported that a large majority of participants described a sensed presence. It is among the most cited and among the most disputed work in the neuroscience of religion.

A double-blind trial at Uppsala University in 2005 randomised participants to the field or to a sham condition and found that measured suggestibility, not exposure, predicted the sensed presence. Persinger held that the Swedish exposure protocol differed from his own. No later double-blind trial has established the field effect. 2
Michael Persinger and Stanley Koren, at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, reported that applying weak, complex magnetic fields to the temporal lobes through an apparatus popularly called the God Helmet induced a sensed presence and mystical-type experiences in a substantial proportion of subjects. Pehr Granqvist, Mats Fredrikson and colleagues, in Sensed Presence and Mystical Experiences Are Predicted by Suggestibility, Not by the Application of Transcranial Weak Complex Magnetic Fields (2005), ran a double-blind replication in which neither subject nor experimenter knew whether the field was active, and found reported experiences correlated with each subject's independently measured suggestibility rather than with whether the field was on. The method on both sides is a controlled experimental exposure with self-reported outcomes, and the disagreement is over apparatus and shielding rather than the arithmetic of Granqvist's results, which Persinger's team did not dispute. Granqvist's team treats the failed replication as settling the question; Persinger's team contested whether the replication equipment reproduced the original field parameters closely enough to count as a fair test, and no further trial has been run to decide between them.

No trial has been run under an exposure protocol both parties accept, so whether the field itself produces the sensed presence is undetermined rather than decided. The Uppsala team tested the claim and Persinger rejected its protocol; neither side withdrew, and neither ran the study that would settle it. 2
Recorded as unknown rather than debated, and it sits beside the debated replication record rather than replacing it. What is debated is how to read the 2005 exchange. What is unknown is the effect itself, because the trial that would decide it has never been run. Settling it needs a pre-registered, multi-site, double-blind trial at the field parameters and exposure durations of the original series, with suggestibility measured beforehand and entered as a covariate rather than offered afterwards as a rival explanation, and the analysis plan lodged before data collection.

A Helmet Built to Test a Hypothesis

Michael Persinger, a neuroscientist at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, built his reputation on the claim that mystical and religious experience could be an artifact of ordinary temporal lobe function rather than evidence of contact with anything outside the brain. His 1983 paper laid out the general hypothesis that weak, complex magnetic fields applied to the temporal lobes could destabilize their normal activity enough to produce sensations resembling a felt presence, out-of-body feeling, or religious experience, depending on the individual's prior beliefs and expectations.

To test it, Persinger's lab built a modified motorcycle helmet, sometimes called the Koren helmet after its designer Stanley Koren, fitted with solenoids that delivered a weak, patterned magnetic field to the wearer's temporal lobes while they sat in a dark, quiet chamber. Hundreds of participants over more than a decade reported experiences ranging from a vague sensed presence to vivid religious or mystical episodes, which Persinger read as support for a neurological, rather than external, account of such experiences.

A Contested Legacy

The God Helmet became one of the most publicly cited findings in the science of religious experience, popularized well beyond the neuroscience literature and often presented, in press coverage, as having explained mystical experience outright. That popular framing ran ahead of what Persinger's own papers claimed and well ahead of what independent replication would support.

Critics raised two separate objections. First, several of the reported effects were open-label or weakly blinded, raising the concern that participants' expectations, not the magnetic field, produced what they reported. Second, and more consequentially, later attempts by outside laboratories to reproduce the effect under tighter blinding did not find it, which is the subject of the Granqvist replication described in its own study record. The God Helmet experiments remain a landmark in the study of anomalous experience less for having settled the question than for prompting the more carefully controlled work that followed.

The founding series reported the effect and a double-blind replication at Uppsala in 2005 did not, finding that measured suggestibility predicted the reported experience while exposure to the field did not. Persinger held that the Swedish exposure protocol differed materially from his own. Neither side withdrew, no further trial has been run under a protocol both would accept, and the God helmet continues to be cited in popular accounts of the neuroscience of religion as though the matter were settled in one direction or the other.
