How it is laid out

In this arrangement the reader deals five cards: the current situation, one's strengths, the challenges, an action or opportunity to pursue, and the potential outcome.

Tarot spreads are conventions of interpretation rather than fixed rules: each fixes a set of positions, and the card that falls in a position is read in the light of what that position is held to mean. Some layouts, such as the Celtic Cross, are long established in the twentieth-century reading tradition; others, including several themed modern spreads, are more recent inventions. Topic spreads

A topic spread fixes its positions to a subject rather than to a shape or a passage of time: the current situation in this area, the strengths available, the obstacle, the action, the likely outcome. Layouts of this kind proliferated through twentieth-century tarot publishing and continue to proliferate now, because a reader who wants one for a subject not yet covered can simply write it.

That is why no author can be given for this spread and why supplying one would be an invention. The atlas records the layout it uses and records the authorship as unknown.

What the structure actually does
