1975 is Yi-Mao, the Wood Rabbit year of the Chinese sexagenary cycle, its identity set by the lunar new year that falls within this Gregorian year. The system pairs ten heavenly stems, each carrying one of five elements across two consecutive years, with twelve earthly branches carrying the familiar zodiac animals, so the two cycles only return to this exact combination once every sixty years. Rabbit years are traditionally read for caution and long, careful judgment, and the Wood here inflects that toward growth and outward flexibility. The same stem, branch and element last named a year in 1915 and will not do so again until 2035.

The Sexagenary Reckoning

1975 carries the identity Yi-Mao in the Chinese sexagenary calendar, the Wood Rabbit year, its start set by which lunar new year falls inside this Gregorian year rather than by the Gregorian date itself. The system runs two cycles at once: ten heavenly stems, each stem carrying one of five elements across a paired Yang year and Yin year, and twelve earthly branches, each branch carrying one of the familiar zodiac animals. The two cycles advance together, one stem and one branch each year, and because ten and twelve share a lowest common multiple of sixty, the full pairing of stem, branch and element returns only once every sixty years rather than every twelve. This particular pairing, Yi-Mao, last named a year in 1915 and will not do so again until 2035.

The sixty term cycle is older than its zodiac branches alone: it was used to count days as well as years in the earliest Chinese calendars, and its year form still sets the date of the Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean lunar new year, underlies Bazi ("four pillars") fortune telling, which reads a person's stem and branch at birth, month, day and hour together, and paces the lunar timing of some ancestor veneration and temple rites that do not follow the solar calendar.

Reading The Animal And Element

In Chinese folk astrology a year is read first through its animal and then adjusted by its element. The rabbit, read as a cat in some regional versions of the cycle, is considered the gentlest of the twelve signs, tied to the moon, to longevity and to diplomacy. East Asian moon lore places a rabbit pounding the elixir of immortality under this same sign. The element modifies that base reading: in the five phase (Wu Xing) system Wood governs the east, the color green or blue, the season of spring and the virtue of benevolence. A Wood year is traditionally read as a season of growth and new initiative; Wood is held to feed Fire and to be held in check by Metal.

Put together, 1975 reads in the folk tradition as a Rabbit year with a Wood cast, Wood's growth tempering the animal's own temperament rather than replacing it. The same twelve animal cycle, adapted with local variation, also orders the traditional calendars of Vietnam, where the rabbit is usually read as a cat, and of Japan, where the pig is usually read as a boar; the underlying stem and element layer that gives 1975 its Wood cast specifically is a Chinese addition that these neighboring traditions do not all keep in the same form. Older reckonings also put the same twelve branches to work outside the calendar of years: the same order once named the twelve double hours of the day and the twelve compass points, so Rabbit marks a direction and a stretch of the clock in those older systems as well as this year.

The phase of this year, read from its heavenly stem Yi, which is yin wood. Each of the five phases holds two consecutive stems, one yang and one yin, so Wood covers 1975 together with 1974, and returns after ten years.

Instance Of

Mao, Earthly Branches

Branch 4 of twelve in the sexagenary cycle, Mao, the branch that carries the Rabbit and governs the double hour 05:00-07:00. It is the second half of this year's cycle name, Yi-Mao, and the twelve branches come round again after twelve years.

Yi, Heavenly Stems

Stem 2 of ten in the sexagenary cycle, Yi, carrying yin wood. It is the first half of this year's cycle name, Yi-Mao. The ten stems advance one place a year, so the same stem named 1965 and will name 1985.
