The cucurbit is the lower vessel of an alembic assembly, a rounded pot, often with a short neck, that holds the liquid being distilled and sits directly over the heat while a separate head is fitted onto its mouth to catch and condense the rising vapor. Its name is Latin cucurbita, "gourd," a plain description of its bulging shape. On its own the cucurbit is simply a heat-resistant pot; it becomes a still only once a head, whether a plain moor's head, a tapered rosenhut, or a returning pelican arm, is set on top of it. Because the design separates the boiling vessel from the condensing cap, a single cucurbit could be reused with different heads for different jobs, which is part of why the alembic family of stills proved so adaptable across a thousand years of use.

How the Cucurbit Works
On its own, a cucurbit does one job: it holds a liquid over heat without cracking and without letting vapor escape anywhere except through its mouth. The rounded body gives it a large surface area in contact with the heat source relative to the volume of liquid inside, so the contents warm evenly rather than scorching at one point, and the narrowed neck at the top is shaped to take a separate head, whether by a tight friction fit or a luted seal packed with clay or dough to keep vapor from leaking at the joint. The cucurbit itself never condenses anything; that work happens entirely in whichever head sits on top of it, so the same pot could serve a plain distillation one day and, fitted with a different cap, a finer separation the next. Its wide base also made it the vessel of choice for operations that needed to reduce a large volume of liquid down to a smaller one before the true distillation began, essentially pre-concentrating a solution by boiling off water before the volatile fraction that mattered was driven over. Because it took the direct heat of the fire or furnace, the cucurbit was usually the vessel made of the toughest available material, most often thick fired clay, so it could survive repeated heating cycles that a finer glass head, kept away from direct flame, did not have to withstand.
History and What It Became
The cucurbit is the base component of the alembic still described in the surviving Greek alchemical writings of late antiquity and fixed into the standard two-vessel form by Arabic alchemists of the eighth and ninth centuries. Its Latin name is entirely descriptive rather than honoring any inventor: cucurbita simply means "gourd," the same root that gives English "cucurbit" as the botanical family name for squashes and melons, chosen because the rounded pot resembled the hollowed-out gourds used as containers in the ancient Mediterranean world.
Because the cucurbit was the workhorse half of the alembic rather than its most visually distinctive part, it rarely appears named on its own in period illustrations, which usually label the whole assembled still. It did not survive as a separate named object into the modern laboratory the way the retort or the receiver did; instead its function was absorbed into the boiling flask of a standard distillation setup, the round-bottomed vessel that sits over the heat source while a separate condenser, rather than a fitted head, does the work the cucurbit's cap once did. The idea it embodies, that the vessel taking direct heat should be separate from the vessel doing the condensing, remains built into every laboratory distillation apparatus in use today.
