The moor's head is the condensing cap of an alembic still, a domed piece fitted over the mouth of the cucurbit to catch the vapor rising from the heated liquid below and channel its condensate out through a side spout into a receiver. Period Latin texts call the same part the capitellum, literally "little head," and Arabic sources call it the ra's, "head," of the cucurbit; the English and French "moor's head" is a later, more decorative name for the same cap, current in Renaissance printed illustrations of distilling equipment. It is not a stand-alone instrument so much as the interchangeable half of the alembic assembly, and different head shapes, the moor's head among them, gave the operator some control over how the distillation behaved without changing the pot underneath.

How the Moor's Head Works

Fitted onto the neck of a cucurbit, the moor's head presents a curved, domed interior surface to the vapor rising from the heated liquid below. That curved surface is the whole mechanism: because the head is not directly over the fire, it stays cooler than the vapor reaching it, so the vapor condenses back into liquid the instant it touches the dome's inner wall. The condensed droplets do not fall back into the cucurbit; the dome's shape is built with a slight downward slope toward one side, so gravity carries the liquid along the curve to a narrow channel that exits through a spout projecting from the head's lower edge.

From there the distillate drips into a receiver positioned just below the spout's tip. The joint between the head and the cucurbit's neck had to be sealed well enough to stop vapor escaping at the seam, typically packed with a clay-and-cloth luting compound that could be broken and reapplied each time the still was opened. Because the head, not the pot, was where the condensing happened, swapping a plain moor's head for a taller, more sharply tapered cap like the rosenhut changed how efficiently the vapor condensed and how selectively it separated one volatile fraction from another, all without altering the cucurbit doing the actual boiling.

History and What It Became

The moor's head is the still-head component of the same alembic tradition that produced the cucurbit and the retort, present already in the Greek alchemical writings of late antiquity and standardized in the Arabic alchemical corpus of the eighth and ninth centuries, where it is called simply the ra's, "head," of the still. Medieval Latin rendered the same idea as capitellum, "little head," the plain technical term used in Latin alchemical and pharmaceutical manuscripts. "Moor's head" is a later vernacular name, current in the illustrated Renaissance distilling manuals of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, including the woodcuts in editions of Hieronymus Brunschwig's distillation books, and it names the same domed cap rather than a different design.

As printed manuals like Brunschwig's spread the vocabulary of the distiller's workshop across Europe, named head shapes such as the moor's head and the more sharply tapered rosenhut let apothecaries specify exactly which cap a recipe called for. The component did not persist as a separately named object into modern chemistry; its condensing function was taken over first by other still-head shapes and eventually by the dedicated water-jacketed condenser, which does the same job of cooling a vapor back into liquid far more efficiently than any dome relying on ambient air alone.
