Borax is the white, crystalline sodium borate salt imported into medieval Europe from Tibetan lake deposits along trade routes that made it a genuinely expensive and somewhat exotic commodity before more accessible sources were later found elsewhere. Its most important property, well known to goldsmiths and metalworkers long before its chemistry was understood, is its use as a flux, lowering the melting point of metal oxides and helping solder flow cleanly when soldering gold, silver and other metals. Alchemists studied it as one of the more unusual imported salts, distinct from the common mineral salts and vitriols native to Europe. In modern chemistry it is hydrated sodium borate, and the element boron itself, isolated much later, takes its name directly from borax.

Borax reached medieval and early modern Europe as an imported commodity, gathered from natural evaporite deposits around certain high-altitude lakes in Tibet and central Asia and carried along long trade routes to European markets, where its distant and somewhat mysterious origin, along with its genuinely unusual chemical behavior, kept it comparatively expensive and prized. Its single most valuable practical property was as a flux: added to a soldering or smelting operation, borax dissolves metal oxides that would otherwise prevent solder or molten metal from bonding cleanly, allowing goldsmiths, silversmiths and other metalworkers to achieve strong, clean joins, a use that made borax indispensable in fine metalworking for centuries regardless of whether the metalworker had any interest in alchemy proper.

Alchemists studied borax as a genuinely unusual salt, distinct in origin and behavior from the vitriols, tartars and common mineral salts native to Europe, and some late medieval and early modern writers speculated about its possible role in transmutational work given its distinctive flux behavior with metals, though no reliable transmutation recipe built around borax survives. Its name, tincal, under which it was often traded and discussed, is itself borrowed from a Sanskrit or related term reflecting the substance's Asian origin, a linguistic trace of the long trade network that supplied it.

Borax is identified as a hydrated sodium borate, usually given the formula Na2B4O7.10H2O, an identification well confirmed by modern mineralogical and chemical analysis and consistent with every historical description of its source, appearance and flux behavior. Its chief historical significance for the later development of chemistry is that borax's own name gave rise to the name of the element boron, isolated as a distinct element only in 1808 by Humphry Davy and, independently, by Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac and Louis Jacques Thenard, meaning that, exactly as with aluminium and alum or zinc and calamine, borax was mined, traded and used skillfully for centuries before the element responsible for its most useful properties was recognized and isolated on its own.

There is no real scholarly dispute over borax's modern chemical identity; the interest here again lies in how consistently pre-modern craftsmen extracted reliable practical value from a substance whose full elemental composition remained unknown to them. The long overland trade in borax from Tibet, a route significant enough to shape which parts of Europe had reliable access to a good metalworking flux at all, is a reminder that a compound's chemical simplicity says nothing about how difficult or costly it may have been to obtain in practice.
