A soft silver metal that must be kept under oil, since it ignites in damp air and skitters across water. Its compounds are ancient and central: common salt, the natron used in Egyptian mummification, soda ash in glassmaking. The element itself was not seen until Humphry Davy electrolysed molten caustic soda in 1807, a method that within months also gave him potassium and would soon give him calcium, magnesium, barium and strontium. Sodium ions carry the electrical signal along every nerve in the body. The salts were alchemical staples; the metal is nineteenth-century and has no correspondence.

Overview

Sodium was first isolated in 1807 by Humphry Davy, who passed an electric current through molten caustic soda and drew out globules of a soft, silvery metal that tarnished instantly in air. The English name comes from soda; the chemical symbol Na comes from the Latin natrium, in turn from natron, the naturally occurring soda of Egypt. Sodium is a soft alkali metal, so reactive that it must be kept under oil and bursts into flame on water. Its compounds, above all common salt, sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide, are among the most heavily manufactured chemicals in the world, used in glass, soap, paper and countless processes, while sodium ions are essential to nerve signalling and fluid balance in every animal body.

Salt carries deep scriptural weight that predates any knowledge of sodium as an element: the Hebrew Bible speaks of a covenant of salt as an enduring, unbreakable bond (Numbers 18:19, Leviticus 2:13), Lot's wife is turned into a pillar of salt in Genesis, and Jesus calls his followers the salt of the earth in the Gospel of Matthew. Roman soldiers are often said to have been paid in salt, supposedly the origin of the word salary, but that story is a folk etymology traceable to an eighteenth century dictionary error: they were paid in coin, and the link between salarium and sal is not a record of payment in salt. None of this ritual and economic weight attached to the metal itself, which is violently reactive and unknown as a pure substance until Davy's battery, but it attaches entirely to sodium chloride, so that the element's most sacred associations run through the compound rather than the metal.

Natron and the Name

Sodium's deepest cultural root is natron, the naturally occurring mixture of sodium salts gathered from dry Egyptian lake beds. Natron was the principal drying agent used in mummification, packed around the body to draw out moisture, and it served in cleansing and ritual purification and in early glassmaking. This ancient substance gives sodium its symbol and one of its names, a thread running from the embalming workshops of pharaonic Egypt to the modern periodic table. The metallic element itself, isolable only by the electric battery, is a nineteenth-century discovery with no alchemical standing, but its salts are among the oldest worked materials of civilisation.

Natron's ritual use extended beyond mummification into everyday Egyptian religious practice: priests purified their mouths with natron before temple rites, and the substance appears in funerary texts as an agent of purification for both body and spirit. In the modern era sodium found an entirely different symbolic role in the amber-orange glow of low-pressure sodium street lighting, once ubiquitous across British and European cities; the light is produced by exciting sodium vapour and emits almost entirely at a single wavelength, the same yellow-orange line that gives a sodium flame test its instantly recognisable colour.
