A Standard Revised Every Four Years, Not Fixed in 1820

A Book of Discipline is not a document a Methodist body writes once and leaves alone. Like the other Methodist connections it grew out of, the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church revises its Discipline at its own General Conference on a regular cycle, so the volume a minister or congregation is bound by today is a current edition rather than the original 1820 text, even though it still traces its authority back to that first publication. The church's own publishing arm, the AMEZ Publishing House in Charlotte, North Carolina, has issued a digital edition covering 2021 and lists a further edition for 2024, consistent with the ordinary four year revision pattern the denomination shares with its sister Methodist bodies.

What stays constant across every edition is the document's job: setting out the church's doctrine, the order and qualifications of its ministry, and the rules by which its congregations, conferences and bishops govern themselves. A Methodist body organized around a connectional structure, bishops overseeing conferences that in turn oversee local congregations, depends on a single written standard everyone answers to, in a way a more independently governed tradition does not need in the same form. For the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, that standard has run continuously since 1820, updated repeatedly but never abandoned, tracing every current edition back to the document a still-unordained congregation wrote for itself before it had a single bishop of its own.
