Aditi's Living Worship: The Deity of Punarvasu

Aditi is not confined to Vedic hymnody; she remains a named object of ritual attention in living Hindu practice, through her standing as the presiding deity, devata, of Punarvasu, the seventh of the twenty seven lunar mansions, nakshatras, that structure Vedic astrology. A person whose birth falls under Punarvasu is traditionally read as carrying Aditi's own qualities, protection, renewal and freedom from affliction, and homams, fire rituals, are performed in her name specifically to address troubles the horoscope traces to that lunar mansion: release from illness, from inherited fault and from obstacles to bearing and raising children, the same freedoms the Rigveda's own hymns to her request directly. This is a narrower and more diffuse form of worship than a goddess with her own dedicated temple network receives: Aditi has no equivalent of a major pilgrimage shrine, and her cult is carried almost entirely through this astrological and ritual channel rather than through image worship at a fixed site. It is nonetheless real and continuous rather than merely textual, a living practice traceable across the same span the Rigveda's own hymns cover, from her role as mother of the Adityas including the sun through her standing today as a nakshatra devata still invoked by name in contemporary Hindu ritual calendars.
