The Order claims descent from an ancient pre-Christian tradition, but scholars of contemporary esotericism who have studied its textual history regard this claimed lineage as almost certainly an invented mythology constructed by the group's own founder from the 1970s onward, consistent with a broader pattern in modern occultism of new movements presenting themselves as ancient in order to claim greater authority than a recent founding would allow.
