Teachings and a Grave Standing In for a Living Rebbe

In place of a living rebbe, Breslov Hasidism holds Nahman's own written legacy, Likutei Moharan and his enigmatic collected tales, Sippurei Maasiyot, as the authority other Hasidic courts locate in a present leader's ongoing teaching, so that the movement's religious life continues to be organized around interpreting a body of text fixed at Nahman's death rather than around new guidance from a successor. Nahman's grave in Uman, in present day Ukraine, functions as a second focal point in the same role, drawing an annual pilgrimage timed to Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, that the YIVO Encyclopedia of Jews in Eastern Europe describes as having grown dramatically once the fall of the Soviet Union made travel to Uman practical again after decades of restriction under Communist rule. Tormented Master notes that critics historically nicknamed Breslov di toyte khsidim, the dead Hasidim, mocking the movement for having no living leader to follow, a label Breslov itself has never accepted, holding instead that Nahman's continuing presence through his teachings and his grave answers the same religious need a living rebbe meets elsewhere, without requiring a living person to embody it. Guides who lead groups to Uman today describe the pilgrimage itself as the closest living equivalent to an audience with a rebbe that the movement still offers its followers.
