Alongside the Bhagavata Purana

The Chaitanya Charitamrita occupies a distinct place in the Gaudiya canon alongside the Bhagavata Purana, which it treats as its own primary scriptural authority and repeatedly cites and interprets: where the Bhagavata Purana supplies the theology of Krishna's own pastimes, the Chaitanya Charitamrita presents Chaitanya as the living demonstration of that theology, understood in Gaudiya tradition as Krishna appearing in the mood of his own greatest devotee, Radha, to taste and teach devotion from the devotee's side rather than only the Lord's.

The text has remained central to Gaudiya institutional life continuously since its composition, read and taught within the Gaudiya Math and, through Prabhupada's own English translation and extensive commentary published across the 1970s, carried directly into ISKCON's core curriculum for new members alongside the Bhagavad Gita and the Bhagavata Purana. Its combination of narrative and systematic doctrine makes it, alongside the Bhagavata Purana, one of the two texts a serious student of Gaudiya Vaishnava theology, whether in the Gaudiya Math tradition, ISKCON or other Chaitanya Vaishnava lineages, is expected to know directly rather than only through secondary summary.
