A Reformist Monk Rises to Head Cambodia's Larger Buddhist Order

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Chuon Nath was a Cambodian Buddhist monk who rose to become Supreme Patriarch, or Sangharaja, of the Mohanikay order, the larger of Cambodia's two Theravada monastic orders, a documented leadership position distinct from remaining a teacher within a single monastery. He was a central figure in the modernizing reform current within twentieth century Khmer Buddhism, a documented reform orientation distinct from a conservative defense of existing practice unchanged.

His reform minded readings of Buddhist doctrine and scripture brought him into conflict at times with more conservative monks, a documented internal Buddhist dispute distinct from opposition arising only from outside the monkhood, and with the French colonial administration, a documented external conflict distinct from a purely internal religious disagreement. That his reform readings drew resistance from both a conservative wing of his own tradition and the colonial government at once is documented as evidence of how far his own program departed from the settled expectations of each.

That a monk who rose to lead Cambodia's larger Buddhist order through reform minded readings of doctrine drew conflict from conservative monks within his own tradition and from the French colonial administration outside it marks Chuon Nath's religious leadership as a documented case where reform provoked resistance on two separate fronts at once.
