Naranjo's distinctive contribution was to make the nine points psychological. Where Ichazo's teaching presented the fixations within an esoteric program of his own design, Naranjo cross mapped them onto the character structures of the clinical literature, psychoanalytic character types, personality disorder patterns, Karen Horney's interpersonal moves, and described each point as the organization of a driving passion with a cognitive fixation, further differentiated by the three instincts into twenty seven subtypes. His 1994 book Character and Neurosis: An Integrative View is the fullest statement, and its vocabulary, the passions and virtues, the subtypes, the lines of movement read psychologically, remains the working language of most serious Enneagram teaching.
Around the psychology he kept a larger project. His SAT program, revived in the late 1980s and carried across Latin America, Spain and Italy, combined Enneagram work with Gestalt practice, interpersonal meditation, music and guided work on childhood material, aiming at what he called the transformation of consciousness rather than mere typology, and he grew publicly critical of the commercialized Enneagram of workshops and airport books. He wrote steadily on meditation, on psychedelic assisted therapy decades before its revival, and late in life on education, arguing that schooling starves the affective and spiritual capacities of children. He died in 2019, honored across the Enneagram world as the teacher who, more than anyone, had made the symbol a mirror of character; how his system relates to Ichazo's original remains part of both men's stories, and the atlas keeps their entries linked.
