The Church They Called the National Cathedral of African Methodism

Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church formed from the 1872 merger of two Washington congregations, Union Bethel, organized in 1838, and the older Israel Bethel, organized in 1821, and over the following century it accumulated enough national standing within Black Methodism to be called, informally but persistently, the National Cathedral of African Methodism, a title that stuck because of who used the pulpit rather than any formal designation. Frederick Douglass's funeral was held there in 1895, and the congregation went on hosting the eulogies, memorial services and organizing meetings of national Black civic and religious leadership through the twentieth century, alongside Shiloh Baptist and the city's other historic Black congregations that anchored the organizing behind the 1963 March on Washington. That density of nationally significant Black churches within a few blocks of the Capitol is not incidental to the city's role as a national stage, Washington's congregations became venues for events meant to be witnessed by the whole country precisely because the country's attention was already there.

The Islamic Center of Washington, dedicated in 1957 as one of the first purpose built mosques in the United States, and the Washington National Cathedral's role hosting state funerals across denominations sit within the same pattern, national religious institutions clustered around federal power. Historically Black Protestant identification leads the district at twenty one percent of adults, per Pew's 2023-24 study.
