NotesFielded 2023-2024 among more than 35,000 U.S. adults, released February 26, 2025. Publishes an interactive religious composition table for each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia at pewresearch.org/religious-landscape-study/state/, breaking respondents into named Christian traditions (Evangelical Protestant, Mainline Protestant, Historically Black Protestant, Catholic, Latter-day Saint, Orthodox Christian, Jehovah's Witness, Other Christian), named non-Christian traditions (Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Other World Religions, Something Else) and three unaffiliated rows (Atheist, Agnostic, Nothing in particular). This database's leading-religious-affiliation fact on the state type records the single largest of those rows per state, which is an unaffiliated row rather than a named tradition in a number of states. The study does not cover American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands or the U.S. Virgin Islands. State-level margins of error vary by state population and are recorded with each individual state's own fact rather than on this source, since they differ from state to state.
