A Membership Line, and Its Strain

Within ISKCON's institutional life the four regulative principles operate as the practical dividing line between an interested visitor and a formally initiated devotee: a candidate for first initiation is expected to have followed the four principles strictly for a period, typically alongside chanting a fixed daily quota of the Hare Krishna mantra on prayer beads, before a temple president or guru will recommend initiation. Because the principles are behavioral rather than purely doctrinal, they have functioned as a visible marker distinguishing committed members from the broader public far more readily than any theological position could, which is part of why outside observers and sociologists studying the movement have often described ISKCON to newcomers primarily in terms of what its devotees do not do.

The principles also became a point of friction as ISKCON grew beyond its first generation of Western converts into a movement with a substantial Indian congregational membership less oriented toward monastic-style temple residency, since many congregational members support temple life and follow Gaudiya practice without meeting the full residential standard the four principles were originally designed to enforce, a tension the movement has managed rather than resolved.
