The Bhagavata Purana's Reversal of the Usual Ordering

Gaudiya Vaishnavism teaches that Krishna is not one of Vishnu's ten descents but is instead svayam bhagavan, God in his own original and complete form, from whom Vishnu and every other divine manifestation proceed. Krishna: The Beautiful Legend of God, the tradition's own reading of the tenth book of the Bhagavata Purana, presents this ordering as the text's own explicit claim rather than a later theological gloss added to it, citing verses in which Krishna is named the source of all avataras rather than counted among them. Hare Krishna Transformed records that this reversal is not a minor point of emphasis inside the movement but a founding conviction, one that shapes how the tradition reads the whole of Krishna's life and teaching: every deed attributed elsewhere to Vishnu's descents is read here as flowing outward from Krishna as the fountainhead rather than backward from Krishna to some prior form he supposedly instantiates. The claim rests specifically on a reading of the Bhagavata Purana that the Gaudiya tradition treats as authoritative above other Vaishnava scriptural interpretations, and Krishna consciousness as ISKCON teaches and practices it is built on the conviction that this ordering is the correct one, not a permissible variant among several equally valid readings of who Krishna is.
