Sankirtana and the Doctrine of the Yuga-Dharma

Gaudiya Vaishnavism holds that each cosmic age, yuga, has its own appointed religious practice, its yuga-dharma, and that for the present age, Kali Yuga, the appointed practice is sankirtana, the congregational and public chanting of the names of God, rather than the elaborate sacrifice suited to an earlier age, the silent meditation suited to another, or the temple ritual suited to a third. Hare Krishna Transformed records that this is not presented as one devotional option among several equally effective ones but as the specific practice scripture itself assigns to this age, a claim that gives sankirtana a theological weight beyond ordinary devotional preference. A Survey of Hinduism situates the doctrine within a wider Hindu framework of cyclical time in which each yuga is held to differ in the capacities available to those living through it, so that a practice demanding great austerity or ritual precision, suited to an age of greater spiritual capacity, is held unrealistic for an age, like the present one, marked by shortened attention and diminished discipline, while chanting remains within everyone's reach regardless of learning, caste or personal capacity. The doctrine is therefore as much a claim about what this age can accomplish as it is a claim about which practice pleases God.
