R. I. Page's survey groups Gyfu among the small set of runes, alongside Feoh and Rad, whose Anglo-Saxon reading required essentially no reinterpretation from the Elder Futhark original, the underlying concept simply carried forward intact into a new linguistic and literary setting. Gebo is itself notable in Elder Futhark scholarship for a distinctive X shaped rune form generally read as representing an exchange or crossing between two parties, an iconography Gyfu inherits directly in the futhorc row's own letterform, one of the clearer cases where the visual shape of a rune and its attested meaning appear to reinforce one another across both traditions rather than the connection being read into the shape only after the fact. Page treats Gebo's X shaped letterform as one of the more secure cases of shape and meaning reinforcing one another anywhere in the row, a crossing mark for a rune naming an exchange between two parties, less speculative than similar readings proposed for Jera or Ing.Cross-Tradition ConnectionsArticle OnGyfu, Anglo-Saxon Futhorc Runes Well-attested Source Divinity Atlas Long-Form Articles, First Editiontier 1SourcesDivinity Atlas Long-Form Articles, First Editiontier 1Comments (0)No comments yet.
