Hisham, and the Damascene Reading of Ibn Amir

Hisham ibn Ammar transmitted the reading of Abdullah ibn Amir al-Yahsubi, the Damascene reader among the seven, recorded here with Damascus as its reading centre, matching Ibn Amir's own. Hisham's transmission stands beside that of Ibn Dhakwan as the two riwayat carrying the Damascene reading forward, the only one of the seven readings rooted in Syria rather than in the Hijaz, Iraq or Egypt.

Hisham's transmission lightens the hamza at a pause rather than rendering it in full, does not apply the greater assimilation known as idgham kabir, and applies imala in only a small number of words. It holds both detached and connected vowel lengthening to four or five counts, leaves the closing mim of plural pronouns silent before a following vowel, and observes no light pause. The basmala's treatment between suras follows three permitted modes, the takbir plays no part in the reading, and verse numbering follows the distinct Damascene count, one of the five regional counting traditions the canonical readings preserve.

As one of Ibn Amir's two transmitters, Hisham's reading carries the standing of the seven. Its hamza treatment differs from Ibn Dhakwan's transmission of the same underlying reading, one of the small number of points on which the two riwayat of Ibn Amir's reading part company while agreeing on most of the rest.
