How the Dutch Reformed Church Renounced Its Support for Apartheid

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

In 1986 the Dutch Reformed Church took its first real step toward repentance for the theology it had built around apartheid. The church called for members of every racial group to pray together under one umbrella and welcomed Black members back into full fellowship, a reversal of the racially divided structure it had organized its own congregations around for decades.

That 1986 shift did not stop at prayer. In the years that followed, the church went further still, moving from welcoming Black members back to labeling apartheid a sin outright, a theological reversal of the very justification the church itself had once supplied for the system.

The change reached the church's public stance well before it reached every corner of its own structure. Racial divisions inside the Dutch Reformed Church's membership persisted well into the 1990s, even as the church's official position on apartheid had already turned decisively against the system it once defended.

What the 1986 turn changed for the Dutch Reformed Church was the beginning of a public break from the theology it had spent over three decades building around apartheid, a reversal that reshaped the church's own statements and fellowship years before it fully reshaped its own congregations.
