How the Sunni Schools of Law Became Canonized

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Ahmed El Shamsy's history traces a specific, documented historical process: how the Sunni schools of law, far from existing in fixed form from Islam's earliest decades, took their now familiar canonical shape gradually, as hadith collection, scholarly consensus and analogical reasoning were themselves institutionalized as authoritative sources of law over the first few centuries of Islamic legal thought.

That documented process matters for a legal school entry because it means the four schools that survived to the present, Hanafi, Maliki, Shafii and Hanbali, were never the only options a jurist of the early centuries could have followed. El Shamsy's own history records other schools of real historical standing that did not survive as living traditions in the same way, the Zahiri school prominent among them, now the historical remainder among the atlas's eight rather than a functioning school with a comparably wide modern following.

An entry therefore records a school's documented historical trajectory honestly: whether it grew into one of the four dominant Sunni schools, persisted as a smaller but continuous tradition such as Ibadi or Zaidi jurisprudence, or survives mainly as a documented historical position rather than a living legal community, since canonization was a real historical outcome that took centuries to settle, not an inevitability built into Islamic law from its founding.
