The Zonal Acharya Crisis and Its Resolution

Before he died in 1977, Prabhupada authorized eleven senior disciples to act as initiating gurus within ISKCON, a decision the Governing Body Commission he had also established initially implemented as a zonal acharya system, dividing the world into exclusive territories in which each of the eleven alone could accept new disciples, a structure many members read as claiming a status close to Prabhupada's own. The system produced a serious institutional crisis through the 1980s, as several of the eleven were removed or left following scandals or doctrinal disputes, and the zonal exclusivity was formally abolished by the GBC in the early 1990s in favor of a system allowing any qualified devotee to be recommended and approved as an initiating guru without a fixed territorial monopoly.

The episode is now openly discussed within ISKCON's own institutional history rather than suppressed, and it reshaped how the society understands disciplic succession going forward: authority is vested in the Governing Body Commission as a collective institution answerable to Prabhupada's original instructions, rather than in a small, closed set of individual successors, which is itself a distinctively ISKCON solution to a succession question every guru-based movement eventually has to answer.
