Refused in 1809, Permitted a Decade Later to Preach in the African Methodist Episcopal Church

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Jarena Lee was a free Black woman born in Cape May, New Jersey, who felt called to preach after her conversion under Richard Allen, founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, a documented calling distinct from a request made without any prior religious formation of her own. When she first asked his permission to preach in 1809, Allen refused her, since the denomination had no provision at the time for women preachers, a documented institutional limit distinct from a personal judgment made about her own fitness to preach.

She instead married and raised a family, a documented interval of domestic life distinct from an immediate departure from the church that had refused her. After her husband's death she renewed her request, a documented return to the same appeal distinct from a request abandoned permanently after its first refusal.

That in 1819 Allen, by then the AME's first bishop, permitted her to hold prayer meetings and exhort, a permission that grew over the following decades into extensive travels as a preacher across the northeastern United States, marks Jarena Lee's path to the pulpit as a documented case where a request refused for want of institutional provision was granted a decade later by the same man, once he held the standing to grant it.
