A Toll Historians Have Not Reconciled and a Contested Reading

The one systematically compiled figure for the Moplah Rebellion is the British government's own count of roughly two thousand three hundred thirty seven rebels killed in action or executed, with a further sixteen hundred fifty two wounded. That figure counts only rebel combatants killed by government forces; it excludes civilian deaths, Mappila and Hindu alike, in the communal violence that spread through the affected taluks in the rebellion's later months, and it excludes deaths in custody beyond the sixty four documented in the Wagon Tragedy. No historian consulted, including Wood in the most detailed archival reconstruction available, has built a reconciled figure covering both combat and communal deaths.

The rebellion's religious character is itself the disputed question. Panikkar reads Islamic idiom used by some rebel leaders as the vocabulary through which an underlying peasant grievance against a colonial land settlement and Hindu landlordism found expression, religion as medium rather than cause. Wood's archival reconstruction gives comparatively greater weight to the rebellion's religious and communal dimension, documenting killings and forced conversions directed at Hindus once the movement's Khilafat leadership lost control of it under British suppression.
