Conrad Wood's archival history, a published version of his 1975 University of London doctoral thesis, traces Mappila attitudes toward authority in Malabar from the era of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan through the end of the 1921 rebellion in 1922. It is the fullest documentary reconstruction of the rebellion's course, including the escalating violence against Hindu landlords, moneylenders and non-cooperating villagers, and forced conversions, that emerged in its later months once the joint Khilafat and Non-Cooperation leadership lost control of the movement under British military suppression.

A doctoral thesis published as an academic monograph, built from British colonial administrative and military archives, long treated as the most detailed documentary reconstruction of the rebellion's day by day course and its later communal violence, distinct from and complementing Panikkar's class-focused account.
